U11-U14: SA United Junior Program
At U11 and U12 the majority of our teams will play 8v8, and our U13 and U14 teams will play 11v11. Players will refine their technical skills and further develop their tactical awareness. Players will experience a high level of competitive training focused on developing their physical and psychological skills. At this level the use of small-sided games are key components of our training philosophy. Small-sided games allow players to practice creativity, game awareness, key skills, communication and most importantly, individual style and flair. Our training staff is instructed to avoid the use of line drills when possible and to use coaching exercises that maximize touches for all players involved. Players at this age will be challenged physically and mentally by the training staff to prepare them for high school and graduation into our senior program. Players will begin to understand different formations of play, and the SA United training staff will have the ultimate say in what formation he/she plays. Trainers must play a formation that best suits the players, and a “club” formation will not be implemented. Players’ positions on the field will become more defined throughout our junior program as they grow to find what best suits them. However, a player may still play “out of position” as needed. Players will be taught the importance of forming ‘teammate’ relationships as we impress upon our players the importance of working as a team. We encourage our teams to learn to defend as a unit and attack as a team. Players are coached to appreciate the sport for what it is; a team sport where all players have equal responsibility and involvement and no one or two ‘star’ players are relied upon to lead us to success.
U15-U18: SA United Senior Program
All SA United senior players will play 11v11. At this age our players are serious about the game of soccer and respond accordingly to the various challenges set forth by the club. Players chart their course through our Senior Program based on their dedication, potential, work ethic, and sportsmanship which are all guided by the SA United training staff. Players should be comfortable playing a variety of formations set forth by the trainer. The training environment will be intense and will challenge and prepare the players mentally, physically, technically, and tactically to play at the next level. The use of small-sided games is still very important in developing team speed, awareness, and decision making. Players should know what they are supposed to do in the defending, middle, and attacking thirds of the field and should be able to respond to a variety of game situations. Players should be willing to accept the trainers’ feedback and adjust and apply that guidance on the field. Team discipline is a must and will be monitored by the training staff. Teams will be expected to attend higher level tournaments, including out of town showcase tournaments. SA United has excellent relationships with college coaches across the country, and we aim to showcase as many of our players as possible to give them the best opportunities and experiences. Our Director of Coaching and Assistant Director of Coaching are also scouts for an international professional soccer academy in the UK. All players in our Senior Program will be monitored as potential recruits for this unique opportunity to study in England while competing against professional clubs on a bi-weekly basis.
